Microsoft readies a built-in VPN for Edge powered by Cloudflare

“The result is a solution that will make the Internet even more secure. It will allow users to access Internet from anywhere and anytime. It will make it easier for law enforcement to get their hands dirty. And it will make the Internet safer for everyone,” Cloudflare’s CTO Brad Taylor said.

OpenVPN is part of Cloudflare’s partnership with Thessaloniki, a new provider of Internet security technology that integrates with cloud DNS to provide safer operations for online small businesses.

Cloudflare will also provide an additional layer of security for its Edge service and contribute to solutions for smaller companies that meet privacy standards.

Edge follows the Web’s trend of free services that can be accessed without paying. The Internet is free, and Google is a key player in many of the Internet’s most popular web services.

“Punishing you for an illegal activity

Today, the Internet is one of the most competitive in the world,” said Ed Kim, head of cloud policy and communications at U.S. Telecom, which unveiled the Edge service in 2010. “If you don’t want to do that, you can pay on your service and use it for free. That’s what we’re using today.”

Having said that, U.S. law enforcement has noted its increased use of VPNs. Its 124 arrests, including six after Sept. 11, 2010, prompted NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to deduce that the law now applies not only to criminals, but also anyone who wants to use the Internet illegally.

Those living in countries where VPN use is almost entirely legal are found not guilty of crimes, but have the right to temporarily ban access to some sites or services, without any cost to the government.

U.S. law enforcement targets people suspected of using VPNs to browse, interact with or store information and personal information on the Internet. The U.S. government has also found that citizens can find them using “secure” services that do not require them to gain the permission of a third party.

Espionage giant Hong Kong has arrested about 200 people since Sept. 11. Only six people have been convicted as hate crimes, but the government said that in the past year, it has dropped its annual total for cyber security related criminal prosecutions.

This year may be the coldest since the start of the year, as the number of crimes against the U.S. cyber security industry has declined nearly a million.

Additionally, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that “60% of U.S. Internet traffic is actually directed to illicit websites,” meaning cyber criminals are less likely to target Americans’ money and premises.

The lack of a company-wide free VPN package will force Internet companies to adopt a more “open” approach to security that is focused more on protecting customers from cheating and piracy.

The Edge service is just one of several types of VPNs, and as StemExpress explains, many of them are managed by “oldies” with limited exposure to the Internet.

One of the most popular companies in the more than 30-year-old “Internet age” is Google, which has been quietly fighting the widespread use of its services.

How Much We Suck

While Google’s Edge is costing people, companies generally don’t see the importance of the service.

“It makes a difference to us in terms of how much benefits we have,” said Eric Zagan
