Rocket Lab catches rocket mid-air using helicopter before dropping it into the ocean
Former SpaceX founder Elon Musk is about to turn NASA into a private company stating that in a recent interview with the National Geographic Society he said that the government will have to do a better job of helping the country with its rockets.
In a blog post posted on his company’s website on Friday, Musk said his new venture, called the Space Launch System (SLS), will allow people to own and own rocket parts from three private companies.
“We’re going to work with the teams from the Rocket Lab – NASA, Orbital Sciences, the company that’s responsible for rockets – to find ways to share our expertise with the world,” he wrote in the post. _
SpaceX said in a statement it would not comment on the announcement.
The elegant rocket that SpaceX intends to launch will be the cheap, reusable Dragon spacecraft and launch it from an existing commercial launch vehicle based on a modified Falcon 9.

“The world needs to be better informed about government involvement in spaceflight,” he said, according to the statement. “It will help us to learn at a much faster pace than ever before. There are great projects underway to improve the way we understand, and others are developing and implementing solutions as they come along.”
Though the launch of the Dragon from the International Space Station (ISS) on Oct. 3 had become the contentious first test flight for the space program, it also provided some clues into the government’s plans to use the rockets for commercial and military purposes in interplanetary space missions, SpaceX said.
NASA will likely have to spend a significant portion of its budget on the implementation of the Falcon 9 rocket and other systems, NASA officials said.

SpaceX, however, has not yet explored what it would like to do with its rockets to provide support for mission launches in space.
The company’s current mission system is the X-15 Raptor which is based on the Falcon 9 vehicle. The U.S. government has offered SpaceX only $1.9 billion for the next five years to launch its next rocket from a SpaceX private facility in Nevada.
SpaceX officials said they had no idea how much NASA would spend with its rockets, but did note that this would be based on the $500 million contract SpaceX has with the government for 15 new rockets launched in the first three years.
According to SpaceX, this means the government’s 2018 budget (the last year it was expected to be under budget) would be $2.5 billion, or about $1.4 billion per year.
“Our people are going to be adapting to the changes in the environment and provide the services that the government is saying they need to do,” Musk said.
The chairman of SpaceX, Elon Musk, stopped short of saying the company has any plans to provide NASA with its rockets and seem to be on the right track.
“But members of Congress, in particular, are very bothered about how the federal government is doing NASA,” Musk said. “They have a bill, for example, that I believe will get supporters in Congress. I don’t know if [they] will get everybody’s support. I don’t think they will do it in a one-size-fits-all fashion. But I think they are going to get it.”
