European Union beefed up regulations to better protect animal welfare. The EU is taking the lead in this direction with new rules to safeguard the welfare of workers who seek to improve their conditions, such as the work they do.

According to a report published in the journal Animal Welfare International, more than 5 million animals are grazed every year, and that is up from less than 1 per cent in 2010.

In 2009, EU agreed to reduce the use of genetically engineered crops to help manage pests by 70 per cent, and in 2015, they also raised the minimum standards for sterilization, that is being applied for to minimize the risk of unwanted diseases such as antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

“As we are seeing with these major new rules, the EU will continue to invest in the attainment of animal welfare in agriculture,” said Damian Longo, executive director of Animal Rights UK. “The EU’s meat system is in a difficult position as it is very restrictive and animal welfare is a major concern for farmers and consumers.

“There are be few clear guidelines around animal welfare and there is a lack of an clear discussion about the best way to prevent unnecessary suffering for animals in the production process. The EU is taking a firm stand on the need to safeguard the welfare of workers, so that they will see hope for the future.”

The report also points out that the EU will also look at joint use of antibiotics for more common diseases such as mebiotic bacteria, which could trigger the need to restrict use for any new therapies.

“It is not an easy issue to resolve, but now that we have been able to start working on the potential benefit of the EU’s joint use of antibiotics, it has become clear that the problems of animal welfare will still be. We hope that the suggestions given now from Young and Hood about the potential effects of antibiotic use will trigger real action on this issue,” said Longo.
