Samsung wins $1 billion deal from Dish to supply 5G equipment
The company announced it would be bidding for a $250 million contract to supply 5G cellular networks to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Ltd. (SES) and Alcatel-Lucent Technologies Inc. (LUV) (NASDAQ:LUV). The deal was announced on September 22 in a filing for a preliminary public offering (PPP), which is expected to close in June.
Sears 2D Inc., which owns Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and Sprint Corp., was also selected as the third bidder on the provisional PPP. Samsung’s company managing director, Steve Johnson, took over as chairman and CEO on Friday.
The deal bolsters Samsung Electronics Co. (SES) by bringing all its services to the side of consumer electronics companies. After the jump, Samsung said it’s going to focus on enhancing its services and lowering its costs by offering services to consumers at a lower price.
Sears is seeking $1 billion in additional revenue from the sale, the company said in a filing. A larger, more U.S.-based company is also in the works, and Samsung could also be the target of such a deal.
The company’s tech giant also went back in a new direction with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SES) bid for a 10 percent stake in Dish and Alcatel-Lucent Technologies Inc. Ltd. (LUV).
Samsung said it expects to employ 8,000 people and raise that number by 4,400 to help the company grow its global sales and gauge the company’s future leadership prospects.
Earlier this month, the company made the same pitch to Dish.
“These are high-quality manufacturing facilities that are ideal for the Dish distribution and service business,” the company said in a statement.
Sears 2D Inc. is now the third largest and most profitable smartphone supplier in the world. Its global sales generated $8.2 billion last year. Its market share was 49 percent in the second quarter, and 51 percent in the third quarter.
Samsung Electronics Co. has been getting its hands on technology for the last five years to try and compete with Apple (AAPL) and other mobile phone companies. Apple is supplying its latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both of which are based on ESM 850MHz technology, which is currently in use in demand in Japan and South Korea.
Sears 2D made its first foray into the smartphone scene in May 2014, when it partnered with DigiCor. The company has since expanded its presence to include a larger shop around the world, and that business has grown exponentially over the last year.
