SALT LAKE CITY β The Premier of the City of Salt Lake City, Leland B. Watson, will address the Utah Legislature on Tuesday, January 1, 2017, at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Capitol.
Watson will be joined by several members of Congress from both parties, asking for help in 2016 to more fully realize Salt Lake City’s vision of a prosperous, renewable economy.
From the outset, Utah has relied on investments that have backfired. We’ve worked hard to build a strong, healthy economy, offering people with a small business a pathway to the skills, education, and health insurance that are essential to our well-being.
Our economy needs significant investments in infrastructure to create jobs and support our people, businesses, and families. We should be learning from the lessons of my father, U.S. Senator Gordon B. Hinckley, and our strong G-7 efforts in Asia. Those investments will strengthen Utah and our economy, encourage innovation and help turn around the Great Recession.
Our economy is built on innovation, not investment in government. We have been a long-standing supporter of investment in our economy. We have shown our commitment over the last few decades to making Utah a more competitive place to enter the global economy and give our citizens the opportunities they deserve.
In addition, families and businesses that are working hard to create jobs and hire and retain employees have felt the impacts of the recession. This is no longer just a business issue, but a national health care issue. It is essential to make sure we are able to meet all of our key high-priority needs for our citizens.
And we need to make sure our next generation of leaders and members understand and appreciate how important it is to build upon our economic and social progress while reducing these costs.
We have great national support in low-income communities, workers and small business owners. We have been an active supporter of the Dreams for America Act, and we have been working with other state and local governments and unions to create a secure, national economy that delivers a level playing field for all of our families.
While our state should not be our top priority, it is important to put an emphasis on public investments that will create jobs and raise incomes for our children. In the ongoing effort to slow the economic and social decline that continues to threaten the state, although no one in Utah can foresee but the retirement of the first generation of Americans, we can support the plans we enacted to build the future and create jobs.
The state leaders from both parties have repeatedly said that they will hold the keys to a prosperous democratic future. As President he helped usher in a new era in Utah and we renew our commitment to secure a safe and prosperous future for our children.
The people of Utah deserve a safe and prosperous future. We must make sure that America’s hard-working and vibrant middle class is an integral part of the future.
In addition, we must do everything in our power to provide all Utahans with the resources we need to build the future that they deserve.
We must broaden the scope of government and expand the scope of government. We must offer more and more services to our 3.2 million residents, protecting them from fraud, abuse, misuse and abuse, and ensuring that the state continues to create jobs and provide the incentives that mean our jobs are available to the 21st century.
The public should know that government service is good for all. Government service overcomes some of the many hurdles it faces when compared to private enterprise, and it is vital that we keep our citizens in work and in health care, ensuring that Utahans have access to quality health care, and are well-educated and well-fed.
For example, we need to reach out to help people understand the benefits of online shopping that is popular in Salt Lake City. Businesses can continue to nurture strong economic growth by hiring and retaining qualified workers, creating
