NASA and other agencies are under pressure to make significant investments in solar systems to help drive new business, but solar roofing has dropped off considerably as the solar roofing industry continues spiraling out of control, according to a recent analysis.

SolarFan and Virgin Galactic’s space flight will likely lead to a $77 million overall investment in solar systems, depending upon the scales of the contracts the companies are expected to negotiate.

SolarFan, a company in California, to become the first private company to test a solar system-specific idea as part of its SolarMark survey, is also looking at how the company can help its customers manage their energy needs, particularly in developing countries where there are large gaps in on-site solar power capacity.

“Solar is a technology and not a financial product,” said one SolarFan spokesperson. “So we’re looking at ways in which our customers can send a lot of energy to a large and interconnected system and have very low cost and very low carbon emissions.”

Virgin Galactic has also been following closely behind with its planned flight of StarLord to explore a new solar system world.
