The 5 best French press coffee makers of 2022
The next step in the quest for excellence in French-speaking coffee culture is to create coffee farms for the public and enterprise companies that are dedicated to coffee farming over the years.
Last year, DuPont introduced the inaugural edition of the La Côte des Esprit du Lille coffee farm, with 7,000 acres of hectares of land acquired.
While common to all of France’s small-scale coffee farmers, this is the first production farm that will feature coffee from the top of the Côte de Lille.
“There are a lot of good coffee farms and the project doesn’t have much to do with the fact that it is a small project on the landscape,” said Marisol Ganceau, president of the group of French Press Coffee Corporations, who will be marketing a coffee farm to the public next year.
“All these companies want to come to the Côte de Lille and take over Afloat Coffee. That’s the real challenge.”
La Côte de Lille Coffee grew out of a group of local farmers that worked with the manufacturer of Teutonic-style mills—which is based in the province of Liege.
The newly formed La Côte de Lille Coffee farm will be distributed to public and enterprise companies with the goal of popping up in the Côte de Lille’s private sector on a regular basis, Ganceau said.
“This will be a small, traditional and organic operation with a good workforce of French-speaking coffee farmers,” he said.
The project will also take care of the production of some 250 varieties of coffee—about 1 percent of which have been cultivated for more than 40 years.
Ganceau said the La Côte de Lille family has been working to raise the profile of its coffee farming business, while simultaneously diversifying the business, as well as announcing plans for new coffee farms for the Pinot Noir Cupinée region.
“We have been doing that for a while, but we had to do it in order to make a sustainable business,” Ganceau said. “The interest in it we had started in the public sector and even the small businesses…. It’s really important to get this into the hands of the people who are most interested in the coffee industry.”
