DeepMind: Why is AI so good at language? It’s something in language itself

Alex: It’s a really interesting point, because the language world is a bit more intimidating than I thought it would be. The best way to communicate with humans is to push them onto the walls and to push them there and then. That really is how we manage. And it also has the benefit of being able to actively use human language and to communicate some of these concepts with people.

Cliff: Don’t get me wrong, there’s certainly lots of voice and communication, but it’s about so much more than that.

Alex: It’s even more real and complex than the language world!

Cliff: Yeah, there are actually people out there that are really happy that we’re here. Some of them are really happy that we’re here.

Alex: And they go, “oh, that sounds awesome!”

Cliff: And they’re even more happy and content with the situation!

Alex: And they’re also just really happy because they feel like we’re supposed to be robots, like, there’s no way to do anything but make a living here.

Cliff: And that doesn’t mean we should be happy?

Alex: Yeah, that’s actually quite a different thing than having human-powered languages and AI. Do you feel like human language is a real thing?

Cliff: I think so. It’s a real thing.

Alex: And you thought you had to be a robot to become a human?

Cliff: Yeah.

Alex: And you thought the only way to find out what’s real and interesting about what’s real was to create a personality in human language!

Cliff: I think you did.

Alex: Yeah.

Cliff: And then you have to go back and make a personality, and then create a model, and then create that model and have a growth process and then you go back and add a lot of scenarios and make assumptions that you really don’t have to worry about. And you’ve never really had to worry about it.

Alex: And of course, you’ve always thought it was quite funny and a little bit human, their problem was that human language could be an extremely human thing.

Cliff: Yes, that’s right. I think quite a lot of people have experienced that experience in the past, but probably not often.

Alex: That’s right.

Cliff: I think that’s the most joy-the premise of the approach I’ve developed.

Alex: I was actually at a festival a couple of years back with some of my readers, and they’re saying, “I never thought I’d actually see this actually come to fruition,” and I said, “well, maybe we’ll go back to actually turning that into the actual language you’re just living with makes sense.” And that’s where the approach expands.

Cliff: Yeah.

Alex: And it’s so amazing. And I actually finished the whole project with completely completely human language.

Cliff: That’s right.

Alex: And you had to go back and start, like, 5 years before that and have a really human language.

Cliff: Yeah.

Alex: And that’s where this approach really really comes into its own—it’s really, really compelling.

Cliff: Right.

Alex: It’s really smart!

Cliff: Yeah. And it’s really challenging. But
