Scholarships for minorities in STEM
Scholarships for minorities in STEM
By Hannah E. Babbitt, PhD September 12, 2018
The number of students pursuing STEM training has increased by almost 30% since 2007, according to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The increase is especially pronounced for STEM education, in which a large portion of students enter their early 20s. STEM is an extension of the sciences, with the highest percentage of students entering in the humanities.
This year’s 2016 STEM Scholarships include $15,000 in awards for “academic excellence” from NSF grants, and $42,000 for teaching “academic excellence” from academic services grants.
The 2016 awards are organized by fields, and include the following:
Best in Science (Bonuses)
Forbes Elite Editor (2015)
Technology (2016)
Latinos and Latinas (2015)
Mental health (2015)
Mental health at work (2014)
Health and wellness (2013)
Education (2012)
Health insurance (2011)
Health insurance in low-income households (2011)
In addition to funding everyday activities for children and adults, NSF scholarships also include $8,000 for fellowships in operational development, community programs, and research facilities, and $12,000 for university-wide scholarships.
The 2016 ranking of the 4th largest STEM award in the country, among STEM fields, is substantially higher than the 2013 ranking.
