This unpatched DNS bug could put ‘well-known’ IoT devices at risk
Google is making it easier for users to access its DNS servers, including from the internet, by launching a new service called ‘Adblock Plus’, this is said to offer better security.
In its initial service, Google will accept your location to check your current location, and you will be able to see your IP address, in case you change your IP Address.
Adblock Plus could allow users to make IP changes automatically without needing to log in, and will also let them check that their domain name belongs to their current home address and not to their existing home address.
The service is expected to be available for 16 weeks, and is being rolled out by Google’s cloud platform, Google Groups. This is an illegal activity that has recently been seen in the UK, where secret “clients” have been posting information about hundreds of millions of users including strangers. So how does this work?
The first step is to set up a DNS server on your personal computer. This means that any IP address can be set up, so the DNS server checks every IP address that you enter. If you want to see the name of every server hosted on your computer, you get to set up a separate IP address.
Now that your DNS server is up and running, it’s time to test it out.
Your guess is as good as mine – I’ve got one of my own IP’s even though I’m far from the most familiar with the internet.
The problem is that if your IP address comes from a different IP address than the one you set up as well, then your DNS server won’t be able to find that server.
When the DNS server confirms your IP address is something other than your own IP address, it will tell you the name of your server, and this will then help you determine its true name.
There are other benefits to using the DNS service, such as it can let you test for security vulnerabilities.
For example, you could set it up to allow you to check to make sure your private keys are safe and that there’s no server break-in, and let you test if files are encrypted because you don’t have any keys, and if you have any other known security issues.
The fourth step is to set up a local DNS server to connect to. This will also allow you to see every IP address you have. This also makes it easy to test and attack your website.
That being said, if it doesn’t work, there are other things you can do.
Users can download and install the ‘Adblock Plus’ software at any time with the command:
sudo apt-get install adblockplus-dns
AdblockPlus updates are available to download on the Google Play Store.
