Air purifier deal: Save up to $105 on Winix air purifiers
SAN FRANCISCO (Marketwired) — Apple Inc. has agreed to buy SkyExec (NASDAQ: SCI) that will build Wi-Fi of its own in a deal that is expected to raise $16.1 billion. The deal comes just months after SkyExec bought ARM Holdings Inc.’s software engineering company, SKY-IQ Technologies Ltd., for $3.12 billion. The buyout would see the company create its own Wi-Fi network for iOS or Android devices.
SkyExec, which has been working to develop wireless solutions for mobile devices since 2007, first unveiled its Wi-Fi mnemonic device last year. It was known for its Wi-Fi-enabled cell phones and installed one of the world’s fastest RF and wireless networks. It’s now working to build Wi-Fi from scratch and gain customers for its upcoming phone and tablet.
SkyExec will build ZTE Systems, a factory designed specifically for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which will start in the fall, as a subsidiary of SkyExec’s eBiz, which is a fiber optic network supplier.
So too, does Android. Currently, the company is based in the U.S., but expects to expand to Europe in the near future.
“We’ve been talking with Apple about our product strategy going forward and we’re just pleased that we’ve been able to get them a partner in the Michigan maker space and we are extremely excited about the challenges they have had going forward,” said Justin Smith, chief executive officer and co-founder of SkyExec. “That’s what gives us an advantage as an electric company.”
SkyExec will hire ZTE to develop its Wi-Fi network.
SkyExec said it has for fourteen years been building the world’s fastest Wi-Fi network for iOS and Android devices, including Apple’s iPhone 6, iPad Air and Apple Watch for the past three years. The company founded SkyExec in 2008 to help expand the world’s first wireless network to a global audience. SkyExec has also taken development of its own hardware, such as Wi-Fi solutions, to the international market.
SkyExec said it has built Wi-Fi to power its smartphones and tablets, as well as to extend its network’s reach to other continents. It also needs a mobile phone to service its networks.
SkyExec also recently bought Thumb, a South Korean networking company, to build a prototype for the ZTE Wi-Fi network.
“SkyExec is still three years away from a fully operational Wi-Fi network and after tens of billions of dollars, it would take a firm, top-tier U.S. manufacturer, like Apple, $100 million to build another Wi-Fi network in the United States. One of the most unpredictable times in modern business is when a top U.S. company starts building its own network,” said Smith.
SkyExec’s current network footprint is about 22,500, which is about the same as that of ZTE Systems, according to SkyExec. SkyExec said it plans to increase its enterprise Wi-Fi network by around 1,800 GB each year.
SkyExec was founded in 1975 and has since been China’s largest Internet company, preparing the basis for the world’s first three-tiered Internet infrastructure.
The U.S. is the world’s third largest Internet provider, behind China’s China Telecom (XING), Russia’s ruble and China’s central bank, according to the World Economic Forum.
