The Office for National Statistics, which conducts the National Flood Insurance Survey in England, estimates flood risk to be about three times greater than previous forecast levels.
It added: “This is an important indicator that makes it easier to make sense of the flood risk, especially where under-water areas are concerned.
“As the UK floods are one of the most urgent national emergency situations in recent times, the Office for National Statistics will continue to monitor this risk and the risks it poses to the UK’s coastal defences.”
‘Inadequate and inadequate’
Another report from the planning body, the Government’s Groundwater Trust, said there was “no evidence that the current risk of flooding across the UK had fallen below the pre-1981 level” and that it was possible “more flooding is expected over time”.
The ministry added: “The risk of flooding across the UK has declined significantly in the last few years, with average rainfall of 54 inches (139 cm) in the period from 1983 to 2006.
“However, this falls well below the previous record of 55 inches (149 cm) in the early 2000s.
“This is because water is expected to continue flowing into coastal areas into the year, as water from the north-east is forced into coastal areas, where it is too late for the water to reach the coast.
“Further increases are expected from the introduction of more, more and more flood risk assessments in the coming years.
“Current levels of flood risk are less than twice the level recorded under the previous year. The risk of flooding across the UK has fallen sharply over the last few years, with average rainfall of 54 inches (139 cm) in the period from 1983 to 2006.”
